Door County’s Favorite Naturalist: Carolyn Rock announces January’s events at Whitefish Dunes

Door County’s Whitefish Dunes State Park’s Carolyn Rock has just announced her schedule of January 2015 events and we at Glidden Lodge are eager to share them! The park is just a 3.5 mile hike from our beachfront resort and we think this is a great way to get some fresh air during our winter months. Ready for an outdoor adventure? Here goes: Thursday, January 1 First Day Hike Winter Detectives. Hike in search of animal tracks and other clues to uncover the secret lives of animals at the park and in your yard. September at the our Lake Michigan beach means means more amazing programming from Whitefish Dunes State Park’s Carolyn Rock. The park is just a 3.5 mile hike down the beach from Glidden Lodge. Sound enticing? We think so too! Saturday September 6 Mushroom Foray. Discover the variety of mushrooms that grow within the park. Join Charlotte Lukes to explore the major mushrooms groups. Learn how to field identify of mushrooms to their family groups. This program is for the serious and beginning mushroom enthusiast. Beginning in the nature center auditorium, follow Charlotte on a hike of discovery. Dress for the weather for this two hour program/hike. 9:00-11:00 a.m. Saturday, September

Early summer is here and that means more programming from Whitefish Dunes State Park’s Carolyn Rock. The park is just a 3.5 mile hike down the beach from Glidden Lodge. Sound enticing? Signs of spring from Whitefish Dunes State Park’s Carolyn Rock. The park is just a 3.5 mile hike down the beach from Glidden Lodge. Sound enticing? We think so too! Question:  Can you name this early spring flower? It generates its own heat to melt the snow around it. Answer: Skunk cabbage You’ll find this flower near swampy places poking up thought the snow. This plant can actually generate enough heat to melt the snow around it! The skunk cabbage blooms long before any other spring wildflower. It also looks very different from most other wildflowers. Instead of having petals, there is a single leaf-like looking sheath called a “spathe.”
